Hong Kong is one of my favourite places in the world, but whenever I’m there, there are a few things I miss: the integrity of my personal space bubble, fresh dairy products, and most importantly, cuddling my cats. Now in a metropolis of over 7 million people and presumably not a lot of cows (I haven’t seen any), there’s not much you can do about the first two issues. But cats? Easily solved by a visit to one of Hong Kong’s cat cafes!
We took a trip to Ah Meow Cat Cafe in Causeway Bay, which is hidden on the third floor of a nondescript building where you have to press a button and wait for someone to let you in. When you find it, you’ll see a sign that says “members only”, but don’t worry about that. Just go in, and they’ll give you a membership card for free.
Once inside, it’s cat heaven! Everything in the cafe is decorated with cats, and they sell the most adorable cat pens, stickers, t-shirts and other stuff you don’t necessarily need, but… Hey, I can always use a spare pen. And t-shirt. Right?
The food is alright, but obviously that’s not what most people come for anyway. We came in at the right time, just when it was feeding time for the cats! If you’re unlucky though, you might not see that many cats at all, as they have their own private little spaces to sleep without being bugged by us humans.
Prices are on the higher side (expect to pay upwards of 40 HKD for your drink), but they’re still reasonable considering you’re paying for food and cat cuddles. It’s only a five minute walk from the Causeway Bay MTR station, so definitely worth a visit for all the cat lovers out there!
