I like crêpes. I like cream. Everyone likes cakes. So when I see people standing in line to eat cakes made of stacks of crêpes that are held together by cream, I want in on that action.
And so I waited.
Lady M started selling cakes to high end restaurants in New York in 2002. Since then, they’ve opened boutiques in New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Hong Kong and Singapore. We visited the one in Harbour City, the mall at Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Harbour that we typically go to for 90% air conditioning reasons and 10% shopping reasons.
Lady M has a very clean, modern design. The cakes are there as much for decoration as they are to be eaten. Luckily the wait wasn’t that long, but felt like it was as I was looking at one of my pet peeves: girls eating food by taking ridiculously tiny freaking nibbles. If you do this, please explain to me why!
Anyway, when it was our turn to sit down, we ordered the signature Vanilla Mille Crêpes and the Strawberry Mille Crêpes.
Each cake is made of at least 20 thin crêpes, meticulously stacked with the perfect amount of cream between each crêpe.
The cake is not at all as heavy as it might sound – the cream is fresh and light, and the crêpes are paper thin. The Vanilla Mille Crêpes is an absolute classic, but I liked the strawberry version even more. It tastes like the classic vanilla with a very natural hint of strawberry. To be fair, it’s not that the taste is very surprising. It tastes exactly the way you would expect it to taste, executed flawlessly with no frills to hide behind. These are deceptively simple cakes, and that might just be what makes them so addictive.
There are other flavours available: chocolate, Earl Grey, green tea, coconut and more seasonal options. Which one would you like to nibble away at?
…No, don’t nibble. Just eat. Please.
